I was looking at GMail’s Alexa page and noticed that someone had messed with the title and description that is provided. I wasn’t sure what the 233100.com was but clicking on the link took me to GMail.com just like it should. I manually typed in the 233100.com and it was obviously some Chinese site that I couldn’t understand.

I then saw the “Edit Info” button on the Alexa page so I thought I would change it back to read “GMail”. When I clicked on it I was taken to a new page where I was to enter in the information that I want to change. I put in the information but it then wanted me to upload a file to the GMail server so that it could verify that I was the owner of the site. I obviously couldn’t do that so my question now is how did these people go about changing the title and description without uploading a file?

We have done a simple remaster of PCLinuxOS MiniMe made specifically for USB flash memory sticks. Also included in the remastered zip is a custom one button syslinux installer that allows you to make the USB drive bootable via Windows XP through a simple one button menu.

Basic essentials:

A 512MB or larger USB flash drive
HP-USB Format tool
USBMMFULL.zip

Here is the tutorial:

Warning: DO NOT RUN makeboot.exe from your local hard drive!! It is intended to be run from your USB device.

Download the HP-USB Format tool and format your flash drive using the Fat or Fat32 option.
Download the USBMMFULL.zip
Extract the contents of the USBMMFULL.zip to your “flash drive”.
Browse to your “flash drive” and click the Makeboot.exe
follow the on screen instructions.
Reboot your computer and set your system BIOS to boot from USB-HDD or USB-ZIP. Also set the boot priority if necessary.

You can log into PCLinuxOS using the username: root and password: root or guest and guest.

Please note: This tutorial has been tested to work from a Windows XP computer with .net and service pack updates. Other operating environments may or may not support the use of the installer.

A new version of Windows Live Writer was just released and it has quite a long list of changes. I have been using Windows Live Writer ever since it was opened to the public and I couldn't imagine not writing with it now.

Here is a list of the new features:

Categories are sorted by name and support scrolling, plus improved support for reading categories from your blog

Improved startup performance

Paste is enabled for Title region and TAB/SHIFT+TAB navigation between title and body supported

Insert hyperlink added to context menu when text is selected

Improved keyboard shortcuts for switching views

The biggest problem that I still have is that Windows Live Writer doesn't support nested categories. However, the category list now has a scrollbar, a refresh button, and is now alphabetized by category name. That means I will still upload a post as a draft in order to ensure all categories and information are correct before the article gets published.

Microsoft Word 2007 Changes The "=rand()" Feature

Microsoft Word has had a random feature (sometimes referred to as an Easter Egg) for quite some time. It is used to quickly generate large blocks of text for testing purposes. Up until Microsoft Word 2007 when you entered in =rand(12) (and then pressed enter) you would receive 12 five-sentence paragraphs that constantly repeated the same sentence:

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

However, if you use the same command in Word 2007 it will output 12 unique paragraphs that describe the new features in Office 2007. The first paragraph will look something like this:

On the Insert tab, the galleries include items that are designed to coordinate with the overall look of your document. You can use these galleries to insert tables, headers, footers, lists, cover pages, and other document building blocks. When you create pictures, charts, or diagrams, they also coordinate with your current document look.

If you are looking for a unique way to explain Office 2007 to your friends then maybe you should try this. You can tell them that you typed it up for them. It might impress them even more if you "type" it up right in front of them.

When the rumor mill gets a'turnin' you're bound to have a few false-starts, and it seems the new black Xbox 360 meme is no exception. The snazzy "black Xbox" seen above might look quite black and Xboxy, but we're sorry to report that it's just a developer box, plenty of which have been out since before launch for testing out pre-release games. Also, if when Microsoft does actually build a black version, we're kind of hoping they stick with that chrome drive tray from the regular 360, and maybe go with a truer black instead of this piddling smoke color. We're definitely not writing off the rumor entirely, according to some "leaked info" from Microsoft's planned X06 announcements this week, they'll be announcing Xbox 360 Black for the holidays, along with 1080p Halo3 and other fanboy pleasers. We also got a tip from somebody who claims to have a friend at GAME that says the black Xbox 360 will be a premium only color, and might even come with an integrated or bundled HD DVD drive and possibly a larger HDD. We suppose we'll know soon enough -- X06 is over tomorrow -- but that doesn't mean we can't stay busy drumming up the hype and unrealistic expectations until then.

iTunes 7 Now Available For Download

Okay, we knew it was coming and Apple finally updated their iTunes site to reflect the newly released version 7! There is a whole slew of new features, but the overall interface is pretty much the same:

Movies
Cover Flow
Automatic Album Art
New User Interface
iPod Games
iPod Summary
Download Manager
Higher Video Resolution
Onscreen Video Controls
Multiple Libraries
Library Backup
Gapless Playback
Ratings and Parental Controls

So it is an impressive list of updates but it was definitely needed since Microsoft has Windows Media Player 11 also being released soon. There is still no word on Vista compatibility on iTunes 7 but I think I’ll give it a try later and see how it goes. Here’s hoping for the best.
